PROFILE

Summary

I'm a versatile, end-user oriented web solutions professional with a broad range of frontend/backend skills and knowledge.

I have more than 9 years professional experience in designing and developing various kinds of web sites and web/mobile applications based on Linux/PHP/MySQL, worked for 4 years on a complex high-traffic e-commerce platform, and now work on data visualization solutions for an advanced market research platform.

My focus is always on the practical value that any solution brings to the end user; I might be building solid code, but I first and foremost aim for excellent usability and a decent user interface. I'm generally more concerned about delivering business value and keeping customers happy then writing perfect code.

Strengths

I can build web solutions, but I deliver most added value by:

  • Analyzing problems and needs;
  • Designing solutions;
  • Communicating with stakeholders.

Career path

I'm looking an opportunity to grow from a senior development role into a less hands-on role, like lead developer, technical project manager, or technical consultant.

I'm open for opportunities to grow into a position between business and technology, where my employer can benefit from my analytical and communicative talents as well as my broad technical background.

Preferred employer profile

I'm looking for a company where:

  • Web development is core business or a big part of it;
  • Agile / incremental improvement of products is used;
  • UX / interaction design is taken seriously as part of every solution;
  • Innovation and improvement are regarded as essential for both company and employees;
  • Serving customers with excellent service/products goes without saying.

COMPETENCES

Thumbs up

My competences are:

  • Excellent in analysis of complex matters, apply structure
  • Can work very well independently but equally well in a team
  • Excellent in written and oral communication
  • Highly motivated to deliver high quality
  • Strong sense of responsibility, even beyond my own position
  • Eye for details, accurate
  • Always looking for improvement, taking initiative
  • Excellent learning skills, can pick up on new things quickly
  • Very broad interest, e.g. (interaction) design, usability, but also management/business
  • Curious for new technologies/better ways of working
  • Fluent in English in writing and speaking
  • Practical experience with (project)management aspects
  • Aware of business context / place in company
  • Good telephone voice and skills (callcenter training)

Earlier employment

Senior Webdeveloper

Employer iBOOD   (Online retail)
Location Amsterdam, NL
Period May 2009 - August 2013 (4 years, 4 months)
Hours Fulltime, 40 hours per week

Company background

iBOOD.com, the internet's best online offer daily, is one of Europe's most successful pioneers in the one-day deal market, offering a single product at an unbeatable price every day in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Austria, United Kingdom and Ireland.

iBOOD headquarters are located in Amsterdam, with satellite offices in Berlin, Germany and Poznan, Poland. The company has several investors and employs around 40 people, with a small in-house development team of developers managed by the IT director.

Job description

The development of the iBOOD platform was initially outsourced to a Polish software company, but in 2009 iBOOD decided to start in-house development and I was the first developer hired to form the development team.

Together with an architect, I played a vital role in the maintenance, improvement and rebuilding of the iBOOD e-commerce platform, consisting of a front-end website, a complex back office application and integration with payment and logistical partners. The architect designed a service-oriented architecture using REST-based APIs, to which the platform has been and still is gradually transforming.

In my years with iBOOD I have learned much about designing and building high-traffic web applications, administering complex infrastructure for both development and production environments, and effective software development management.

I currently have a versatile role, involved with both long-term projects such as designing a new platform based on an ERP system, while also supporting day to day operations on the legacy systems.

Achievements

As always I have a very pro-active role at iBOOD, taking many initiatives to improve both software and the development process. Examples include activities such as:

  • Setting up bug tracking and helpdesk software to organize the work
  • Developing sophisticated deployment scripts and logging tools
  • Transitioning from Subversion to Git version control and designing a new workflow
  • Designing and managing development and test environments
  • Selection of a new hosting partner, co-designing the new platform and managing the migration process
  • Bringing innovation by moving from Apache to nginx / PHP-FPM
  • Improving platform performance by selecting a load balancing solution
  • Leading development of the mobile website
  • Helping to develop coding and REST API standards
  • Bringing technical leadership for the platform architecture

Additionally, when the team was very small and there was no office IT support, I have supported iBOOD for a while as a parttime local system and network administrator. My work is currently focused on my role as a senior developer.

EXAMPLES

I've always been driven to help businesses improve by providing innovative, user-friendly web solutions that make a real difference, taking a pro-active approach. Here's what that means.

Call center staff scheduling solution

Before I was a professional developer, I worked for a mid-sized call center that was still using paper agendas, which was of course hardly ideal.

I convinced the management of my idea for a complete staff scheduling web application for both management and employees, built it myself, the call center paid for it and they used it happily for over 10 years, without hardly any maintenance necessary.

Time tracking web solution

One of my employers used a very user-unfriendly and clumsy desktop application for time tracking.

I discovered I could easily replace the desktop client application with a web-based application. I convinced the management of my idea, built the web application, which has been in use as long as I worked there.

Colleagues were very positive about the ease of use and management was very happy with the improved imports and additional reporting it provided.

Internship management solution

The Dutch Royal Navy, a client of one my employers, needed something to deal with the many internships the Navy offers. All communicaties were done using email, which didn't give much control.

Although building web applications was not really my employer's business, I convinced the management and the Navy of a web application that would both help students to register for internships, while providing a comprehensive and convenient back-end interface for the Navy.

I built that application, which integrates with the 'working for the navy' recruitment site, and is now in use for several years.

Personal finance solution

I also regularly create solutions for personal purposes. One of example hereof is a web application for managing personal finances, including tracking income and expenses, projecting expected income and expenses, balances, budget planning, and more.
